R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is similar to S, which was developed at Bell Laboratories by John Chambers et al. It provides a wide variety of statistical and graphical techniques (linear and nonlinear modelling, statistical tests, time series analysis, classification, clustering, etc.). R is designed as a true computer language with control-flow constructions for iteration and alternation, and it allows users to add additional functionality by defining new functions. For computationally intensive tasks, Fortran and C code can be linked and called at run time. License: GNU General Public License (GPL) Changes: The default graphics device for non-interactive use is now pdf() rather than postscript(). The default width and height for pdf() and bitmap() have been changed to 7 inches to match the screen devices. Most users of the X11() device will see a new device that has different fonts, anti-aliasing of lines and fonts, and supports semi-transparent colors. Considerable efforts have been made to make the default output from graphics devices as similar as possible (and in particular close to that from postscript/pdf). There were many other enhancements.
