mp3togo is a command line tool for creating sets of low bit-rate MP3 or Ogg Vorbis files for use on a portable player. It reads MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, m4a, and WAV files, decodes and normalizes the file, and then encodes the file in the desired output type. This makes large archives of music compatible with generic portable players no matter what formats exist in the archive. The smaller, disposable files produced can be stored at a greater density on small capacity portable devices. Files can be specified on the command line or read from m3u files or a running instance of XMMS or Amarok. A cluster mode distributes the transcoding to local LAN nodes.
